WHMC CFY experience

1Lt Nicole Cioni
Staff Audiologist, WHMC

It all started about 1 Sept 2001 when I first stepped into the Wilford Hall Audiology clinic. I can say it was a little overwhelming to have begun my AF career during the week of 11 Sept 2001. Not quite what I was expecting. But once things settled down I can say it was everything and more that I wanted for my CFY experience. I came with the idea of learning a little bit about as many different aspects of Audiology and the Air Force as I could. My CFY year at Wilford Hall let me learn a lot about many different areas in Audiology and the military including: cochlear implants, hearing conservation, fitting and trouble shooting all styles and technologies of hearing aids, vestibular testing (ENG, VENG, CPD), ABR, MLR, OAE, how to write packages, set up TDY, and preparing for briefings to give at my first MASC, etc. I was fortunate enough to be able to work with a wide variety of patient populations, ranging from 1–week–old babies to a retiree that turned 100 years old this past July. These were experiences that not all my classmates from graduate school can say they’ve had.

I’m excited to have successfully completed my CFY, make the transition from CFY to staff Audiologist, and join the other staff audiologists at WHMC and be here to help the four new CFY’s have the same wonderful experience I had.
