Military Audiology Short Course

MASC 2008

The next Military Audiology Short Course was held 18-20 Feb, 2008 in Portland, OR. The sponsoring facility was the Holiday Inn located at 1441 NE 2nd Ave, Portland, OR 97323 (phone 503-233-2401). The schedule of events is now posted. A collection of photos from our meeting is available.

  1. A block of 30 hotel rooms has been set aside for the course. It is on a first come first served basis. Room rate is government per diem $106/night. All rooms have a king bed. A good number of hotels in Portland offer the government rate but if you want to stay at the HI, it is suggested you call early. The block of rooms will only be reserved until 1/19/08. The Marriot where the CAOHC course and NHCA will be held is 5 miles away and a $1.75 fare on the TriMet MAX light rail system.
  2. Breakfast, lunch, and mid-morning coffee/soda/water will be served each day of the course. Breakfast starts at 0730. Breakout day is Monday. Full session with guest speakers and vendor/sponsors will be on Tuesday and Wednesday.
  3. The deadline to submit presentations is December 15, 2007. Please contact CPT Alexander, Capt Wynn or myself if you wish to present. A tentative schedule will be on the website by 15 January 2008.
  4. Stephen A. Fausti, Ph.D. Director National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research will speak about blast trauma and MTF to VA Audiology issues. Raymond M. Hurley Ph.D. from the U of South Florida will speak about pharmacology and audiology. Dr Sig Soli will address the HINT and fitness for duty evaluation, etc. We are still working on additional speakers let me know your suggestions.
  5. Requests for vendors/sponsors are on-going. The following companies have responded to date. We anticipate about 20 sponsors.

  6. Capt Pedersen is working on the banquet arrangements for Tuesday evening. Awards will be presented and retirees honored.

    Starkey is pleased to offer a two hour training class at the Military Audiology Short Course (MASC) in Portland, Oregon.

    The objective of the classes is to provide an overview of the Starkey digital hearing instruments on Government Contract. Emphasis will be placed on the Destiny 1600 featuring integrated real ear. We hope you will consider attending!

  9. Frye Electronics is offering a tour of their facility and an Oregon Wine and Cheese Reception on Monday afternoon. Frye Electronics is located in Tigard, Oregon, a close-in suburb of Portland. Our products are designed and manufactured here. We would like to invite the visitors to the Military Audiology meeting to come for a factory tour and an Oregon Wine and Cheese reception with the Frye family and staff on Monday.   10. Please let your specialty leader know that you want to attend MASC, pay your dues, get your presentation submissions in on time, and get your hotel room, if anyone has any special dietary needs let me know. Meals will be buffet with multiple selections.

Past Conferences

The 2007 Military Audiology Short Course was held 16-April through 18-Apr-2007 prior to the American Academy of Audiology meeting in Denver, Colorado. CEU's were awarded from AAA and ASHA. Abstracts from the past meeting are available for review.
